Can I Get Invisalign If I Have Had Dental Work Done?

If you’re interested in getting straighter teeth, Invisalign can give you the results that you’re looking for discreetly, and without many of the dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces. For that reason, they’re a favorite of adults who are looking for orthodontic treatment without wires or brackets.

However, adults are also more likely to have had other kinds of dental work done, like crowns, bridges, or veneers. You may wonder whether those will interfere with getting Invisalign treatment; if you’re curious, here’s what you ought to know.

Can You Get Invisalign if You Have Crowns/Bridges/Veneers?

If you have a dental restoration, you may wonder if placing something over your teeth each day will cause problems for it. Your aligners also move your teeth around by applying constant pressure to them, which may cause further concern in some people.

Thankfully, there isn’t anything to be worried about; Invisalign aligners are completely removable, and won’t disrupt anything that’s adhered to your teeth. That being the case, a previous dental restoration shouldn’t have any impact on your ability to get the straight smile that you’re looking for!

…With One Exception

There is one exception to this: attachments. Invisalign aligners have become much more powerful in recent years, and attachments are one big reason for that—your dentist can adhere certain small features to your teeth that allow them to address bite issues or focus on certain problem teeth.

However, attaching these to your restorations could be difficult, so your dentist may refrain from using them on teeth that have had dental work done. In select cases, this can interfere with treatment to some extent, so you should carefully discuss this possibility with your dentist.

Can You Get Braces With Crowns/Bridges/Veneers?

The primary alternative to Invisalign treatment is traditional braces, and for some types of alignment issues, they’re actually the only option. For that reason, it’s worth noting that tooth restorations will interfere with traditional braces.

Brackets can’t attach nearly as well to the porcelain that most dental work is made of as they can to your natural enamel, which puts them at risk of popping off and delaying your orthodontic treatment.

If you’re looking to straighten your teeth and you have had work done, Invisalign is the best way to go!
