A lot of people tend to get nervous about dental visits, but apprehension skyrockets when sedation is involved. We tend to think that there must be a dire problem, or a complex surgery involved when the dentist brings up anesthesia. After all, in medical situations, those are generally the circumstances in which it’s offered. When it comes to dental work, however, that’s not always the case. Keep reading to learn about 3 common misunderstandings around dental sedation and why you might want to consider it for your next appointment!
Myth #1: Sedation is Only for Surgical Procedures
While your dentist will almost certainly offer sedatives if you have surgery on the horizon (thank goodness!), that’s not the only time they might recommend it. It’s important, even for basic visits, that patients feel calm and comfortable enough to sit still for their appointments. Many people, however, experience extreme anxiety or have other medical conditions that cause involuntary body movements. Sedatives can be used to help keep you relaxed so your dentist can complete the necessary work.
Myth #2: Sedation Puts You to Sleep
It’s easy to assume that being sedated means you’ll be in a state of sleep so you’re unaware of your surroundings. Visiting the dentist is hard enough without worrying that you’ll be rendered unconscious! Fortunately, your dentist has access to solutions that keep you tranquil but awake. Oral conscious sedation, for example, consists of a pill that you take on the day of your appointment. It sets you at ease, but you’ll still be responsive enough to communicate with the dentist and their team. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, can also be used to soothe your frayed nerves while remaining awake.
Myth #3: Anyone Can Get Sedation
It’s important to note that though your dentist can offer sedation in many instances, some conditions don’t allow for it. It’s not always considered safe if:
- You’re pregnant.
- You’re allergic to the medication.
- You have other medical conditions or medications that interfere or put you in danger.
Fortunately, there are multiple forms available so if you’re blocked from one, another might still work for you.
Dental problems generally don’t clear up on their own, so you must keep up with visits with your dentist. If yours recommended sedation, it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a major problem. It could simply be that they want you to feel peaceful so they can help you keep your mouth healthy!
