What to Expect When Recovering from Full Mouth Reconstruction

If you suffer from multiple or complex dental problems, your dentist may recommend that you undergo full mouth reconstruction, which is a customized treatment plan designed to get your oral health back on track. Full mouth reconstruction can involve a number of different procedures, each of which may come with a recovery period. Here is a brief overview of what you can expect while you are on the mend from some of the treatments that are commonly included in full mouth reconstruction:

Gum Disease Treatment

Scaling and root planing, also known as a “deep cleaning,” is one of the most common ways to address gum disease. It may cause some discomfort around the teeth, and you may find that you are extra sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages for up to 4 – 6 weeks. However, it is unlikely that you will have to take time off of work. As soon as any sedation wears off after the procedure, it should be safe for you to drive.

Dental Implants

Dental implants involve a multi-step treatment process. One of the most important parts of the procedure is the dental implant placement surgery. Most patients are able to return to work within a day or two of their appointment. However, you’ll need to adhere to a limited diet (primarily soft or liquid foods) for several weeks. The soft tissue at the surgical sites should heal fairly quickly, but the bone underneath may take 4 – 6 months to completely recover and bond with the dental implants.

Fillings and Crowns

Placing a filling is a fairly simple procedure. As soon as any local anesthesia wears off, you should be able to eat and drink normally. No downtime is required. However, keep in mind that the treated tooth may be extra sensitive for a few weeks.

Placing a crown requires some modifications to a tooth’s natural structure, which can cause some temporary soreness and sensitivity. When you have a temporary crown, you will need to take some precautions so that it does not come off prematurely. Once your permanent crown is in place and any tenderness wears off, your mouth should feel normal and function well.

Cosmetic Treatments

Some cosmetic treatments, such as veneers and whitening, may cause some temporary sensitivity. Whitening even requires that you stick to a special “white” diet for 48 hours after your in-office treatment. However, most aesthetic services do not require any downtime.

Recovering from full mouth reconstruction may require that you make a few modifications to your eating habits and daily routine. However, any inconvenience you experience will be well worth it when your smile is completely restored!
